Typography Sketchbooks

This autumn Princeton Architectural Press, New York has published the new book by Steven Heller, the world’s leading graphic design historian, and Lita Talarico called Typography Sketchbooks. It's been also published in Europe by Thames and Hudson. Typography Sketchbooks compiles works by nearly 120 of the world's leading graphic designers, typographers, and leterers.

Making of Quadra Universe

Last week, I made a big polystyrene sculpture for International Festival of Contemporary Music and Media Arts MIGZ 2011, Moscow. I worked on this 4 x 3.6m relief for three days, and today I'd like to share some pics and stop-motion animation showing the assembling process. Quadra Universe will stay at the Red October creative cluster after the festival is over.

I've just received a copy of Inside the World of Board Graphics by Rockport Publishers, USA featuring some of my skateboard designs and a couple of other works. The funny thing is that I've been mentioned in the Contents as "Aske, Japan" and all the descriptions to my works have been mixed up. Nevertheless, big ups to the authors!

Russain Creative Panel at OFFF 2011

On June 9-11, 2011 the OFFF Post-Digital Culture Festival was held in Barcelona, Spain, and for the first time in this fest’s history the program included a Russian Creative Panel. It was divided into three parts: Masters of Motion, Digital Artists and Young Blood; and I was honoured to be among the artists whose work was showcased during the presentation. Thanks to the OFFF organizers, Evgeny Kiselev, Arseny Vesnin, and Vladimir Tomin!

Last week I got hold of a book called Typoshirt One, published in 2010 by Index Book, Barcelona. It contains some of my t-shirt graphics made from 2007 to 2009 for CTRL Clothing, Anteater Clothing, Montana Cans, Beautiful Decay Apparel, as well as one self-made tee.

Faces and Laces 2011

Recently I've created a series of six plywood artworks, which were exhibited last week at Faces and Laces Street Culture Show, Moscow. I've spent a month and a half working on them, and today I'd like to share some pics taken during the making of these works, as well as some photos from the exhibition.
As for the technique I used, first, I made vector images based on my sketches; carved all the details out of plywood using a scroll saw; then sandpapered and smoothed them. And finally I painted all the pieces and glued them together. Enjoy it!

New Works Sneak Peek

This Friday, June 3, Faces and Laces Street Culture Show will be held in Moscow for the fifth time. I've been creating new works especially for this event for more than a month. Since last year I exhibited a series of printed posters, this time around I decided to make something with my own hands. I'll post the photos of all the works after the show. I've just received a copy of AnyForty Teeology book. It's a 78-page book showcasing all the artwork made for AnyForty, UK by different artists from all around the world in 2008-2010. There are pictures of the two designs I made for the Versus range of tees and a poster for last year’s Charity Versus Exhibition. Big ups to Alan!

Fixed Gear Bike

Besides riding bikes, I really like to build them up. Late summer 2010 I started collecting parts for a fixed gear bike, and finally it's finished. I painted the frameset white and black; the rest of the parts have been left in their original color. This is the third bike I've built; the two previous ones were BMX bikes.

Street Fonts Book

In 2009 I made an ABC canvas for the book by Claudia Walde a.k.a Mad C called Street Fonts—Graffiti Alphabets from Around the World. This 320-page book, exhibiting alphabets by 154 artists from 30 countries, was released in February 2011 in 5 languages: English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian. It was great to discover that the Spanish edition has my artwork on its back cover.

Kunstkraft Exhibition

Guys from Montana Cans invited me to take part in an exhibition and charity auction which was held in Mannheim, Germany at the end of July. The project called Kunstkraft took place at Studio Alte Feuerwache where four of my recent illustrations were printed and exhibited along with works by other artists. All the money raised from selling the artworks will go to children in Kenya.

A few weeks ago when I was in Berlin I came across the book that features some old works by Sicksystems (my own works, as well as some works by my ex-colleagues) and 10 tips for young graphic designers I wrote more than a year ago. The book by Matteo Cossu is called 1000 Ideas by 100 Designers, published by Rockport. Check out the photos after the jump.

New Illustration With Type

Another book featuring some old works by Sicksystems was released in the UK this summer. New Illustration With Type by Martin Dawber contains the Sicksystems' profile along with some type-based works. Since the materials for this book were collected more than a year ago when Sicksystems was still a trio, the information is outdated. Nevertheless, you can check out some nice spreads under the cut.

Write The Future @ Faces and Laces

The sculpture I created for Nike Write the Future advertising campaign was exhibited at the street culture group show called Faces and Laces, held in Moscow on May 21-22. I thought that combining 3D typographic elements, which I really like, with a replica of Moscow International Business Center will be a great idea because the latter has become a symbol of modern Russia and its future development. Since Write the Future is all about football, I decided to add a soccer ball which gave the sculpture the final touch. You will find some more photos from the show after the jump.

The Making of Nike Sculpture

In spring 2010 Nike commissioned me to create a sculpture for their football-themed advertising campaign Write the Future. I decided to make it a complex object consisting of a large number of elements of different size and shape. I had all the details cut out of foamed polystyrene, then I painted them red, crimson, white, black, and grey and glued them together. After the jump you can view some pictures taken during the making of the sculpture.

AnyForty Versus Exhibition

Alan Warlde of AnyForty UK invited me to take part in the upcoming group show at Start the Bus Bristol art gallery. Al asked a bunch of designers and illustrators, who has already worked with him, to create an A3 poster for the show. After the 12 posters I made during the last month for the Faces and Laces show (which will be held in Moscow on 21-22 May) this seems to be a pretty relaxing thing to do. So I’m going to chill and enjoy creating this illustration.
The show at Start the Bus art gallery will last three days from June 11 till June 13. If you happen to be in Bristol in June, please drop by! I’ll post some pictures from the show after it’s over. Stay tuned!

New Works Uploaded

At the beginning of the year guys from the Spanish Belio Magazine offered me to publish a book of my works. They scheduled the release for autumn 2010. It seemed to be such an exciting project, but a few days ago they told me that, unfortunately, due to financial problems they won't able to print the book. So I decided to upload my recent works, which were reserved for the book, onto my Portfolio.

My profile has been published in Print Magazine #2, Vol. 64; I was chosen along with other 19 young artists to be featured in their special annual New Visual Artists issue. My friend from New York has sent me over some photos of the mag, as well as some pics of my illustration which was displayed at Phaidon Store in NYC. Thanks to Mitya Pankov for the photos!
